It goes without saying that Winston Churchill was a prominent leader who had a big impact on the outcome of World War II. Many people look up to him as a successful person as leader. If we want to learn leadership from him , we need to become more familiar with his personality and some of the most significant features of his life.
1. Courage
Churchill fought in many battles and in most cases, he was actively participating in the frontlines. However, he always remained unharmed. He would write to his mother and friends whenever he survived near-death experiences in wars. He had come to believe that God would protect him as he was serving his purpose in life. These experiences gave Churchill a sense of invincibility that emboldened him and gave him great courage in his later years.
2. Perseverance
We don’t know how and where he developed this sense of perseverance. Because, surprisingly enough, during his childhood and years at school, teachers would always complain to Churchill’s parents about his lack of effort. One could claim Churchill’s father’s death was a watershed in his life, which marked the beginning of his Herculean efforts in politics, war, oratory, and writing. From these events, it can be inferred that his father’s death may have spurred Churchill to persevere greatly in all his efforts to vindicate himself in this father’s eyes. The echo of his dead father’s exhortations haunted Churchill throughout his life to prove himself a worthy and deserving son.
3. Independence
If perseverance is the most difficult of Churchill’s traits to explain, then independence is the simplest. Churchill was sent to boarding schools throughout his youth, where he learned to manage his life without his parents who rarely visited him. This fact alone is enough to explain his independence. His father’s willingness to commit political suicide rather than compromise his principles must have deeply impressed young Winston. The most searing event in Churchill’s life, his father’s death, forced a certain amount of independence on him. At the age of 20, he suddenly became the man of the house.
